Grand Final show down awaits South Coast heavy weight clubs
Two potential victors have emerged in the Foragers South Coast Interclub Series – the Jervis Bay Dolphins and the Kiama Coasters.
With a ‘double points’ round looming at the TNSW Club Champs, we took some time to have a look at the record of these two combatant clubs – via our Tale of the Tape!
Its currently one title a piece in the history of the South Coast Interclub Series, with the Kiama Coasters taking line honours in ICS01 but it was the Jervis Bay Dolphins taking out line honours in ICS02. Both clubs have cemented their places as the ‘powerhouse clubs’ of the South Coast and rightfully so. Both clubs are proud to have a strong stable of athletes, covering a variety of age groups and wonderful cultures where ‘winning’ is the new normal.
Kiama TC are no stranger to success at the TNSW Club Champs either, after taking out their division in 2017 and 2018, but stumbling at their chance at ‘threepeat’ glory, taking second in 2020. So with only 0.5 of a point splitting these them, all eyes now turn to the TNSW Club Champs.
The penultimate round of the South Coast Interclub Series, saw Kiama needing a big points haul at the Wollongong Triathlon Festival, hosted by our wonderful mates at Elite Energy. And like the mail man, they delivered, a spectacular MAX OUT with 25 critical points in the bank. The stars for the Kiama Coasters being A Besnard, Smith, Street and Freeman.
They pulled back a whopping 12 points on the Jervis Bay Dolphins who still sit at the top of the table. But the Coasters didn’t have it all their way, with the Illawarra Cannons showing some fight, taking home 24.5 from a possible 25. The stars of the show for the Cannons being Hargrave, Pozzer and Arber. Often considered the ‘sleeping giants’ of the South Coast, it’s only a matter of time before they awake, and show their competition what they are made off.
Shellharbour took out third at the Wollongong Triathlon Festival, a result that would make their inspirational leader Rob Spicer proud. The club have performed remarkably well this season, and with 46 of their athletes already registered to take part in the TNSW Club Champs including an event split between juniors and adults, it’s clear that their goal of creating a wonderfully family friendly and inclusive club is showing success. Keep an eye out for the club in the Junior Division, who smell blood in the water and are looking to strike.
Fourth at the Wollongong Triathlon Festival was the Dolphins, a disappointing result by their lofty standards, but none the less a solid 13 points. Rounding out the results was the Eurocoast Nomads and Highlands Shaggy Cows.
All eyes are now firmly on the Grand Final showdown in Forster. The Kiama Coasters have without doubt made their intentions clear by entering nearly triple the number of adult athletes as their rival, perhaps cementing their place as the victors. But the question is, will the Jervis Bay Dolphins go on a strong final recruitment drive, even out the numbers and come over the top of the Coasters? If their long time leader and president Rod Rose has anything to say about it, they will!
Once the dust settles in Forster, who will be sitting on top of the mountain, drinking the sweet nectar of victory? And who will be forced to lick their wounds, and have to rebuild and recruit for ICS04?
Only time will tell…
