Sydney League 1: A Strong Start at IRONMAN Western Sydney 70.3
The 2025/26 Sydney Triathlon League 1 season kicked off with a bang at the IRONMAN Western Sydney 70.3, held on Sunday, 21 September. Clubs across the region competed in both the 70.3 and Sprint distances, earning valuable Performance Points and Participation Points to set the stage for the season ahead.
Panthers Lead the Charge
Panthers emerged as the early leaders, topping the ladder with a combination of strong performances and full participation. Leon Sharp was the star of the weekend, taking overall line honours across the 70.3 — an incredible effort that gave the Panthers a massive boost.
Alongside Leon, Christopher Cooper, John Hughes, Mike Hiser, Kelly Collins and Darren Powell, Mark Dempsey, Luke Hannigan and Carol Irving all delivered key points, setting a high standard for the season.
Bondi BRATS Make Their Mark
Bondi BRATS showcased their speed and skill, placing sixth overall. Top performers included Kiera Batten with 8 points and Kristina Kraft scoring in her first round, demonstrating the club’s depth and commitment. The athletes’ energy and determination are exactly what makes this league exciting.
Coogee Comets Show Consistency
The Coogee Comets displayed consistency across the board. Andrew Gibietis, Hannah Gumbley, and Catijn Schierbeek all earned double-digit points, with Mark Garcia, Craig Pringle, Wiebke Wessels and Eric Poulin contributing across the field. Their athletes’ efforts in both Sprint and 70.3 distances are paying off — keep bringing that determination to every start line.
Engadine Dingoes and Hills Red Army Close Behind
Both the Engadine Dingoes and Hills Red Army delivered solid performances in Round 1.
Representing the Red Army, David McEwan, Grace Hayward, Julie Howle, Greg Smith, John Puz, Harrison Wood, Gavin Tait and Jodie Hill were among the club’s key contributors. The Hills Red Army can beat any club on their day, if they come in strong numbers. And Round 1 has shown they mean business.
A special shout-out to Jay and Rachel Kennedy who represented Engadine with distinction — your dedication is inspiring, especially as key volunteers who make that club happen is amazing.
Hunters Hill Hustlers, Moore Performance Bats, NS Mighty Mites
Hunters Hill Hustlers did not score in Round 1 but are set to return stronger in Round 2. Moore Performance Bats had a strong showing thanks to Thales Da Silva Souza, Nick Taylor, Tony Golden, George Grigg, Sabine D’Haeseleer, James Naldrett, Gareth Howitt and Dan Thomas, demonstrating early-season potential. NS Mighty Mites did not score in this round but are ready to build momentum.
South West Sydney Golden Eagles, TriMob, WS FilOz Eagles
A special call-out to Dennis Contemplacion, the sole competitor from WS FilOz Eagles, for representing his club solo and earning valuable points for the league. Likewise, Ahmad Ageez also raced as the only Eagle in the Sprint event — your commitment is outstanding.
