Before Sydney Triathlon Premier League kicked off in season 2022/2023, we wrote that there was an air of inevitability around a Warringah Waves victory.
Perhaps someone forgot to mention that to the athletes from the mighty Hills Red Army??
In the end only two points separated them.
Yes, you read that correctly. Two (2) points.
Across seven rounds of interclub rivalry, it was only the 2 points that separated the eventual winner, Warringah Waves and their cross-town rival, the Hills Red Army.
The 2 points difference makes a mockery of any athlete thinks they don’t matter, and they won’t count. Quite clearly, it does matter, and it does count!
So whilst the Waves drank the cup of victory, the most surprising result was the relatively disappointing results of the Sydney Triathlon Giants.
Sitting fifth at the conclusion, this was a far cry from the lofty heights of victory, an outcome achieved in ICL03 and ICL04. In fact, their 199 points tally in ICL03 remains the highest and most dominate outcome of any club across any series or league since the concept started in 2019/2020. So, a fifth won’t make anyone internally in the club happy or remotely satisfied.
And in scary signs for their opposition, club president and leading points scoring for the Giants, Daniel James has made his intentions clear and up front.
“STG will be there in force this season across all events all season. We don’t shy away from our goal. We intend to win the double this season including our division at the NSW Triathlon Club Champs and also the Premier League. You heard it here first!”
Daniel isn’t shy of putting his money where his mouth is, sitting third on the all time MVP points scoring across all leagues, having amassed a huge 46.5 points through five seasons and he’s showing no signs of slowing.
In front of him is the one and only, Dave McEwan. Dave continues to prove that age is just a number, representing the Hills Red Army with pride and appreciation. A more loved member of the triathlon community would be hard to find. Some call him the smiling assassin, others call him just a general all-around awesome bloke. Whatever you call him, his results speak for themselves. At the conclusion of last season, he was inducted as the very first Interclub League Hall of Famer, reaching 50+ points. There is a reason the medal is named after him. And it’s no surprise to this author that Dave took out his own medal in Interclub 05. He’ll have to fire for the Hills Red Army to win.
So the stage is set. It all kicks off on December 15th in the idyllic setting of Callala in the South Coast, Interclub rivalry reignites across 7 rounds. The series is the definition of ‘something for everyone’ featuring Duathlon, Aquathon, Short course, medium and long course triathlon. Every member in a club can contribute (either via performance or participation points).
With 10 clubs competing, questions arise everywhere. Will Coogee TC continue their improvement and growth and head up the ladder after a solid fourth last season. Will the Cronulla Sharks, often referred to as the sleeping giant of Sydney’s South continue their direction upwards and return to the type of form that made the almost unbeatable of years gone past? Will the Panthers deliver on their huge potential? If either club ever truly embrace the Interclub, we know they’ve both got huge fire power, athletes and depth to really do something special.
How will the newly relegated clubs of Macarthur TC and Brighton Polar Bears fare, now they are mixing it with the big boys and girls up in Premier League? The word on the street is keep an eye out for Polar Bears current MVP David Sullivan who wants to prove that the clubs success was no fluke. Their goal is to emulate, if not better, last season.
