Hills take out maximum points in Round 1

And we are off and running!

Sunday the 8^th July witnessed Round 1 of the Sydney South West Interclub as over 300 athletes descended on the Sydney international Regatta Centre in Penrith to compete at the Hills Triathlon Club Winter Duathlon.

The sell-out event was well attended by the eleven clubs contesting the Sydney South West Interclub but it was the home club and reigning Club Champs Champions, the Hills Red Army, who took out the most points on the day.

David McEwan led the charge for the Red Army with his victory in the 60-64 Male category. He was well supported by his Hills teammates as they finished with maximum points available on the day. The Red army will head to the Nepean Triathlon in October with 25 points on the board but with several teams hot on their heels.

Panthers and Team Mac Tri both had strong showings and left SIRC with 11 points to their names. An Age Group win for Josh Ferris of Panthers and podiums for Rachel Eagles and Cody Turner of Team Mac Tri propelled both clubs up the leaderboard at this early stage.

The Western Sydney FilOz Eagles surprised a few people by taking out 4^th on the day. A great outing for a club on the rise under the strong stewardship of President, Joey Guerrero. They will head into Round 2 buoyed by this showing and keen to add to their 9 points.

Concord and LAPD Lightning are split by .5 of a point in 5^th and 6^th. Mark Huber secured two vital points for Concord with his victory in the 40-44 Male category, with Tim Molesworth’s podium in the 35-39 Males keeping the Lightning in striking distance of several other clubs come Round 2.

The Hawkesbury Hawks will be happy with their 6-point return from this past weekend and sit one place ahead of the Cronulla Sharks on the ladder, who will be looking to make more of a splash and charge up the table over the next few events. 

Pulse sit 9^th with 3 points, ahead of Balance Bolt and Engadine Dingoes who didn’t manage to trouble the scoreboard this time around.

There is a three month wait until the next race on the Sydney South West Series Calendar, but then the racing comes thick and fast as Nepean is quickly followed by Kurnell #1 in November.

It has been a great start by Hills but several other clubs will walk away from Round 1 delighted with their returns. In such a competitive field, a top five finish will be a great achievement for any team. The big question, who is going to emerge as the Red Army’s main contender?
