Kiama Coasters on top in Berry

It has been a weekend of firsts. The first ever Elite Energy duathlon in Berry, which also was the first ever South Coast Interclub event. Both were greatly anticipated, both delivered.

It was the Kiama Coasters who jumped out to an early lead in the 7 Round competition. Buoyed by their recent Club Champs success, the Coasters took great momentum into the opening round and will be delighted with how they have started. Cheryl Freeman, winning her age group brought home two valuable points as did Angela Besnard. President Geoff Besnard also enjoyed a fine day with a 2^nd placed finish, as did Kevin Goodwin.

Just 0.5 Points behind were the Eurocoast Nomads who had a tremendous day out in Berry to finish second, showing that the smaller clubs cannot be underestimated. Daniel Jones and Sally Jeffrey both won their age group and were aptly supported as five other Nomads enjoyed top 10 success, including a 2^nd placed finish for Richard Jeffrey.

The Highlands Shaggy Cows, who have only been in existence since late 2016, finished third on the day, just 4.5 points behind the Nomads. The Shaggy Cows are looking to use the new Interclub Series as a way to grow their club membership, with results like this, it won’t take long at all. Michelle Roche secured a 3^rd place finish in 55-59 Female AG to help the cause.

The Jervis Bay Dolphins took 4^th in Berry with 8 points. Club President, Tony Lim, leading the charge with a 1^st place in 65-69 Male AG. Annette Sampson also won her AG to cap off what was an excellent start by the Dolphins.

The Shellharbour Mariners and the Illawarra Cannons finished 5^th and 6^th respectively. James Alexander and Josh Bagnall both finished 4^th for the Cannons cause with Rob Spicer, Club President of the Mariners finishing 2^nd in the 45-49 Male AG.

Round Two will see the South Coast clubs head to Kurnell before heading to Nowra in January.

For now, it is the Coasters on top. After such a great opening round performance, their season expectations may begin to shift. However, the Coasters won’t be the only Club believing they can build on their Berry results to become the first ever South Coast Interclub Champion.
