FAQ’s
What is the NSW Triathlon Interclub League?
The NSW Triathlon Interclub League (ICL) is a season-long competition between affiliated NSW Triathlon clubs in different regions.
Clubs will accumulate points through their members participation and performance at events listed on their Interclub League series calendar.
Each leagues’ calendars consist of a variety of distances at pre-determined events.
At the end of each season, eight Interclub League Champion clubs will be crowned. Further, male and female MVPs for each league will be recognised and club MVPs awarded based on performance points earned throughout the season.
Are the Interclub Leagues administered by NSW Triathlon?
Yes. NSW Triathlon relies heavily on the data provided by local club run events and commercial race directors to calculate the points for the Interclub League rounds.
How does the ICL differ from NSW Triathlon Club Championships?
The ICL’s are regional and will only pit clubs against other clubs in their region.
The NSW Triathlon Club Championships will remain the premier opportunity for affiliated NSW Triathlon clubs to compete against like sized clubs from across NSW. However, it will double up as a ‘Double Points’ round for the Interclub League (with the exception of the Central West League).
How can your club be a part of the Interclub League?
All affiliated NSW Triathlon clubs and members who hold a Standard or Premium membership are eligible to be a part of the ICL. Just show up to the races which are part of your Interclub League calendar and you’re on your way. We do the rest based on results.
Which race distance at the nominated races will earn points?
In collaboration with the clubs at the start of each season, NSW Triathlon will set the races at each event to be either a performance points earning race or for participation points only.
Do members need to let NSW Triathlon know which races they are competing in?
No, NSW Triathlon will work with the race directors to ensure all NSW Triathlon triathletes’ results are provided for points calculation allocation.
Do I need to register to be a part of my ICL?
No, to enter the series our members simply need to register through the event’s website and be an active AusTriathlon member. It is the responsibility of each individual to ensure they are including the correct TA membership number and the first name and surname matches their TA membership, along with their club. If an athlete is a member of more than one club, they will need to advise which club they are allocating their points to.
Who can earn points?
You must be a financial, competing member of Aus Triathlon and NSW Triathlon. Other rules include:
- Non-competing AusTriathlon members are ineligible (ie Social or Basic membership holders).
- One-day memberships are ineligible.
- Participants in the 21 day Trial or 8 week ‘Try Before you Buy’ program who have not converted to annual members are ineligible.
How can large clubs be in competition with smaller clubs?
NSW has created a points structure which reflects the % of members who compete, which will even out the playing field between large and small clubs. A similar equation has been created with relation to the ‘Performance points’
How do I register for an event?
The ICL events are conducted by external Event Directors and clubs who have their own registration systems. Members must register through their links and include their correct and current TA Membership number.
If I don’t race the nominated ‘performance points earning race’ distance can I still earn points?
Yes, you can contribute to your clubs ‘participation points’ by racing and finishing any distance at a triathlon event that is listed on the ICL race calendar.
You can only score ‘performance points’ by finishing in the top 10 at the nominated ‘performance points earning race’ at a nominated event.
What will each club receive?
NSW Triathlon will present plaques to the league champions at a designated event / prize giving opportunity following the end of the season.
What if I am a member of two or more clubs?
You can only earn points for one club per race entry. At the point of registration, members will need to choose which club they would like their points allocated to.
How are clubs separated if both clubs finish the season on the same amount of points?
A Max Out ensures clubs can earn a maximum of 150 points at each event on their ICL calendar. This means that a club can accumulate over 150 points at an event but will not be awarded more than 150 at any one event.
However, if there is a tie between clubs on the ladder at the end of the year (same points), points accumulated during a Max Out will be included to separate the clubs.
If clubs are still tied after the inclusion of points on countback that include those accumulated during a Max Out round, the club with the most Participation Points accumulated throughout the season will be the winner.
If Participation Points are also equal between the two tied clubs, a draw will be the conclusion.
What is the promotion and relegation criteria for the Sydney based leagues?
At the end of each season, promotion and relegation will apply across the Sydney League One and Sydney Premier League. The three Sydney-based clubs with the highest points totals in Sydney League One will earn promotion to the Sydney Premier League, while the bottom three teams in the Sydney Premier League will be relegated to Sydney League One.
Is there an individual athlete award?
Yes, there is. Performance Points gained from a top 10 ten Age Group placing at events on your Interclub League Calendar will go towards individual athlete awards, called Most Valuable Player (MVP). The MVP will be awarded to the top scoring male and female athlete in each league.
There is also an award for each Club MVP meaning the athlete who accumulates the most performance points within their club.
